A Thanksgiving dinner menu just doesn’t seem complete without cranberry sauce. Even though most people around our table (and I have a feeling around a lot of tables in America) take a tiny little serving just because it’s the thing to do. Well no need to feel obligated any longer. I have an alternative for you! It fits all the criteria of the beloved cranberry sauce: it’s red, it’s opaque, it’s jiggly, it’s cold. But…you have to try it! You will love it and your children will ask for it on their plates! Mine make sure it’s on the menu and fight over who gets to help make it (o.k. they don’t actually fight, but you get the idea).
Cherry Cinnamon Applesauce
2 cups water
1/2 cup cinnamon candies (Red Hots)
1 quart applesauce (4 cups) — home made chunky applesauce is best!
2 small (.3 ounce) packages of cherry Jello®
Boil water and cinnamon candies. Stir until the candies are dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in Jello® until dissolved. Stir in applesauce. Carefully pour into a 2 or more quart dish. Wait at least 30 minutes to refrigerate (Putting very hot items in the refrigerator makes the motor run more to get it back to the proper temp.) Chill at least 4 hours until set.
