How to Make a Bandana Tablecloth for the 4th of July – Raising Homemakers

Uncategorized

Independence Day. A perfect time to pull out the red, white and blue to decorate!

And here is a perfect project to have ready for your 4th of July BBQ.

Here is what you will need…

  • Bandanas in red, white and blue (I used 12, 4 of each color)
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Serger (optional)
  • Rulers to square up the bandanas. If you have a rotary cutter and mat, it would be perfect for this project

Start by squaring up each bandana. I found that each one was a different size and the edges weren’t straight so I squared all of them up to 19” square. This was the largest size I could square them up to.

Next decide on your layout. I made my tablecloth 3 by 4, so I used one of each color in each row.  Alternate the colors so you don’t have two of the same color next to each other.

Sew or serge the bandanas into rows, right sides together, using a 1/4″ seam. If you don’t have a serger you can zig-zag the seam allowances after sewing them.

After sewing all the bandanas into rows, press the seam allowances in opposite directions on each row. I.E. If you pressed all the first row seams to the right, press all the second row seam allowances to the left, the third to the right and so on. This will make it easier to get the intersections to line up perfectly.

Next, place the first and second rows right sides together lining up the intersections. Because you pressed the seams in opposite directions the intersections should just “click” together.  Sew and zig-zag or serge the seam.

Repeat this process for each additional row.

Press all seams.

Serge or zig-zag the outer edge of the tablecloth.

Press a 1/4″ hem to the back all the way around the tablecloth.

Top stitch less than a 1/4” seam all the way around the table cloth to hold the pressed hem.

Set your 4th of July BBQ table using your new and very patriotic tablecloth!!!
