Have you ever thought about how what we surround ourselves with affects us? If we have a messy environment, we are more prone to feel bad. On the contrary, if we surround ourselves with lovely and beautiful things, it lifts our spirits. No matter where we live, we can surround ourselves with beauty. It really is more of a mindset than how much money you have to purchase things. Think about what you would like to have on your walls, on your furniture, and on the floor (probably not much there!) Your home does not have to be Pinterest worthy, but beautiful to you and your family.
A lovely thing to decorate your walls with is Scripture. I believe even Walmart has started to carry some rub-on transfers for the walls of homes with Scripture on them, or at least pleasant sayings about home life. There are also tutorials online about how you can print your own stencils and use these to write Scripture on your walls. Even if you do not have artistic ability, you can do rub-on transfers or wall stencils.
If God has gifted you in some area of arts or crafts, you could paint your own paintings of beauty, whether simple or elaborate, and hang them on the walls. You could make cross-stitch pictures to hang up as well, or small knit items. Whatever adds beauty and adds a “homey” feeling to your abode.
Another great place to find inexpensive decorations is the thrift stores. There is most likely one, or several thrift stores in your area. They usually have lots of cast off items for sale in the decoration department. We have found several lovely things for my daughters’ rooms here. You can find fake flowers, baskets, jewelry boxes, tea sets, and just about anything else you can imagine, but for more affordable prices. Yes, some things might be broken, but just watch out for that while you’re shopping and see if it may be fixable.
If I could, I would purchase a lot of paintings like the ones you see here from Allposters.com. Yes, they have some weird things on their front page, but you can search for whatever topic you want, like “families”, or “mother”, or “children”. It is helpful to surround our children with beautiful images of family life and homemaking, and artwork can assist you with that. You can also look on my blog for more ideas, as most of the artwork there is from Allposters.com. Teach your children to see the beauty around them and to appreciate all that God has made and that His creatures have made.
It is good to use your imagination to picture what you would like your home to look like and then start putting plans into place little by little. Remember, we are not necessarily talking about remodeling, but working with what you have and obtaining some new items to add beauty to the home.
And last but not least, it is always good to rid yourselves of things that no longer aid your family in any way, thereby freeing space up for something else needful, or for just playing or resting in! And also, cleanliness always adds to the beauty and comfort of our homes. Remember, home is a pleasant place, a sanctuary from the world, and you and I have been given the gift of tending to our little homes here on earth with the specific purpose of blessing our families and others that enter herein.
