The school year is coming to an end in a few months and my eldest daughter is graduating this year. I have had many thoughts about her graduating as it is indeed a bitter-sweet time. Bitter because you don’t want to see your little daughter grow up and sweet because she is reaching milestones you have always dreamed of! And while this great embarkment is upon us I have had many questions of her preparedness flood into my mind. Was she truly prepared for life and what else needed to be taught?
Now the greatest and most important thing will always be that they walk with and serve the Lord. That is always a priority for us. We encourage that at a very early age and seek to teach a biblical worldview early on.
But we must understand that life is a learning process and not everything needs to learned by the time they graduate. Life is truly endless process of learning and it does not end because one graduates, in fact, so much of it is just beginning.
Now as I share my thoughts, remember–we must not look at what one family’s goals are and compare them to ours. Every family will have different goals for the Lord’s unique goals for them in life. I share these because I think it is helpful to have some definitive goals to prepare our beloved daughters for the life that lies in front of them.
For my daughters, I would like them to have experience in a bit of everything. Here are some things that I feel my daughters should have some knowledge in the area of home life:
1. Can they cook several of meals/desserts/or follow recipes?
2. Can they mend? Can they make clothing if they have to?
3. Can they clean properly? Organize laundry?
4. Can they care for children in a God honoring way?
5. Have I taught them to honor their husbands by honoring their father?
6. Do they know how to start a garden to supplement healthy food if they need to?
7. Do they know how to balance a checkbook/budget, etc?
8. Do they know how to live economically in case hard times fall upon them?
9. Do they have experience in knowing how to make money from home? How about multiple streams of income?
10. Do they know how to teach themselves everything and anything they might need in the future?
11. Does she have discernment, wisdom, strength and perseverance to make it out in a world that will seek to battle against her family and her faith?
Daughters are pillars that grown into beautiful wives and mothers that will raise the next generation for the Lord. What a lovely thought! Let us do our best in raising and training them the best while we can with the little time we have.
