A momma sits home alone with a broken heart. She feels she’s lost her beloved child. She remembers nursing this precious one, rubbing little toes, getting slobbery kisses, catching bugs together, giving piggyback rides.
Now, her child is beyond reach.
Every mother grieves with her. We know the fear of losing our children to the world and Satan.
But we need to be very careful how we respond to our fears of this happening or to the reality that it already has.
In the kitchen cooking one day, I was listening to Luke online, chapter by chapter. Above the din of bickering children and spilled legos and general chaos, I heard this:
“Now as He approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow… when the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her…”Young man, I say to you, arise!”… And Jesus gave him back to his mother.” {Luke 7:12-15}
Moms, we must always have in our hearts the character of God. Ours is a God who returns children, even grown ones, to their mothers.
In Luke 8:49f, Jesus gives a daughter back to her parents and in Luke 9:42 Jesus “rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy and gave him back to his father.”
Again and again we see daughters and sons… dead, possessed with evil, unable to save themselves… being redeemed by Jesus and “given back” to their parents again.
Even in the darkest hour, It is NEVER too late and your child is not beyond reach.
We must remember the greatest, most significant thing a parent can ever do. It is not to control or to retreat from the world or to pretend the danger doesn’t exist. It is not to teach good morals and right habits in the hopes that they will turn out alright.
Rather, it is to get our children to Jesus.
Like the father who searched Jesus out with a plea for his son so we, “with prayer and thanksgiving, can let our requests be made known unto God.”
And a very fun, practical way to get your younger child to Jesus is to engage their senses. You can use leaf markings… play flashlight tag… go on a treasure hunt …have a tea party…all to introduce your child to the character of God. I have done this with my children and prepared a Family Activity Guide to Knowing God.
This first Volume (planning on more!) covers 4 names of God and provides 20 devotions with related activites. My kids love it! If you would like to receive this free guide, simply subscribe to my blog. The link to the download is at the bottom of each post I write.
Will you take a moment right now and pray for your children and all the children of the mommas reading this post? Plead with Jesus to heal, to restore, and to give our children back.
Because we serve an awesome God who demonstrated His willingness to do just that.
