Finger Paint — Crafting in the Kitchen with my Girls

The kitchen isn’t just for cooking!  It’s also a place where science experiments are completed and crafts of all sorts can take form!  An inexpensive craft is the best craft in my eyes!

Here’s our recipe for home made finger paint!

Flour Finger Paint

What You Need:

  • One-cup flour
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • Two-tablespoons salt
  • Food coloring or tempera paint

What You Do:

  • Mix the flour, salt, and cold water in a saucepan. Beat the mixtures (with whisk or rotary beater) until smooth. Add the hot water and boil it until the mixture is thick. Beat until smooth. Add food coloring to add color. Store this in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Crafting in the kitchen with my children can be stressful if I don’t plan it right.  If I want to do a craft with the older ones and the younger ones might get hurt doing it  I’ll wait until the younger ones are in bed and then do some crafting with the older children.  Or I might set the younger kiddos at the table with a different (but still fun) and exciting craft while the older ones do something a little more advanced at the kitchen counter.  Try having everyone wear aprons  if it’s going to be really messy.  Being crafty can be fun! Now go mix up some finger paint and have a blast!

About The Author

Carmen is the love of her teacher/pastor husband, and mother of 7 semi-picky eaters ages 13 to 2. Aside from homeschooling her children she likes to cook yummy and inexpensive meals in her family’s pre-Civil War farmhouse kitchen. This is a far cry from their first week of marriage when her lack of cooking skills led to her husband’s stir fry every night. Thus began her journey on the road to being a keeper of the home. She is determined for her children to know the skills of home keeping and through her blog (Old House Kitchen) intends to help people enjoy their kitchens one recipe at a time. Along with homeschooling and cooking, Carmen enjoys spending time with her family, camping, and crafting. Carmen can be found at oldhousekitchen.blogspot.com and Facebook (Old House Kitchen).
