It is easy for our daughters to have a jaded and skewed view of themselves in our culture today. The world all around them teaches them that they are subpar if they are not skinny, beautiful, popular, creative or smart enough. Wrong messages are splashed on magazine covers, on advertisements and yes, even unknowingly in our homes if we are not careful. We need to rethink what values we are sharing with our daughters and making sure they come from a biblical standpoint.
If our daughters are confused about who they are and are not taught or reminded of who they are, they can quickly get off on the wrong path. The world will be more than happy to define them. Parents need to teach daughters that they are valued in God’s eyes–that they are His daughter’s and that they are loved.
Doing so can make all the difference in how they relate to themselves, others, and their decision-making for their future.
We recently shared this image on Facebook and it got quite a response with nearly 400 shares in half a day. It really struck a chord.
Daughters need to be taught who they are in Christ. If they have a strong foundation they can often see the difference when a man tries to take advantage of them or mistreat them. A loving father in the home can help so much with that, a daughter also watches the example of her Christian father and if he is doing what he is supposed to, she would be a wise daughter and make that her standard for men.
Mothers can help by teaching them the Word of God. Some of the truths that should be taught is who she is as a believer in Christ. Here is a short list:
- loved
- forgiven
- a new creation
- blessed
- a saint
- holy and without blame before Him
- victorious
- set free
- complete in Him
- alive with Christ
- free from condemnation
- His disciple
- more than a conqueror
- dead to sin and alive to God
These are just a few. Here is a longer list with references:
Who I am in Christ
Let us be faithful teaching our daughters who they are in Christ and praying for their salvation.
