In day-to-day life, in the busyness of the home, we may have a tendency to lose track of what is most important. There is laundry to wash, fold, and put away. There is mending to be done, academics to teach to our children, three meals to provide for hungry bellies every day. There is shopping to attend to, meals to be planned, husbands to support and encourage, and of course spend time with. Not to mention all the unexpected things that pop up in our every day lives. These things are a part of our homemaking duties and are good, worthwhile things. We should be happy to do all of these things and more at home, even if we do not find each one of them pleasant.
But in all of our toiling and sacrificing for our families, we must keep the future in mind. Our little (and not so little), girls will one day grow up. I am not speaking only of what most people normally refer to–we mothers missing them being little.
But one day, they will be grown-up ladies who will have been raised under our care and training.
Will we have trained them well? Will we have taught them the most important things in life–to know and love their Saviour, Jesus Christ, to walk in His ways? Will we have set a good example to them in being a wife–to love and respect our husbands, seeking in all ways to be a help to him? Will we have set a good example as mothers–will we have been patient and kind while instructing our children in all matters of life and godliness? Will we have set a good example as Christians–teaching and showing by our lives what is well-pleasing to the Lord? Will we have set a good example as homemakers–will we have taken care of our homes and families with cheerfulness, showing by our attitudes the importance of taking care of the home, and will we have used our time wisely in order to do what is most important?
In all these things, and more, we are setting an example to our daughters, who will hopefully one day follow in our homemaking-footsteps and be an example to their own children. Of course, we will not do everything perfectly as long as we are in this body of flesh–that is why we must sincerely apologize and ask for forgiveness when we fail, and entreat the Lord for His wonderful help. But let us keep in the forefront of our minds the example we are setting to our daughters as we live in our homes with them every day. We are, after all, raising future homemakers.
