Today we have a post from our sweet new contributor JES from Strangers and Pilgrims on Earth:
“Nothing awakens a reminiscence like an odor.”
~ Victor Hugo
If autumn was to claim one sense, I think it would be that of smell. Memories of these cooler months are most often associated with aromas. One thinks of cinnamon sticks and spice when one thinks of November. This easy-to-make “mulling spice sugar scrub” is simply one more ode to a fragrant fall.
What is wonderful about this recipe is mostly everything can be found in the homemaker’s special arsenal, her
pantry
! All you need are these simple supplies and a few minutes:
- 1 cup sugar (plus a few tablespoons or so more to get the desired consistency)
- 1/2 cup almond oil (or a 50/50 blend of almond oil/olive oil or your favorite body oil)
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tbsp. mulling spices (you will find our make-it-yourself recipe here)
- clean container or jar with lid
Optional: 1 drop of orange, cinnamon, or On Guard essential oil (or 1 drop of each)
To begin, simply blend together the mulling spices with ¾ cup of sugar in your blender (you can make your own mulling spices
here
). The mixture
will come out somewhat coarse but that is fine. It will be a nice exfoliator for dry, winter skin.
The last step is to stir in your
almond oil
(or whichever one you choose to use), the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar and the cinnamon. If you desire to include some essential oil, you can do so now.
Gently mix your ingredients together with a spoon and pour into a lidded container. Your body scrub is now complete! If the mixture is too dry, add a little more oil. If it is too oily, add more sugar until you reach the desired consistency.Directions for Use: In the shower, massage a small handful of scrub all over wet skin (avoiding your face and other sensitive areas while concentrating on dry ones), rinse off and pat dry. Don’t wipe away the oil feeling since this will keep you moisturized without applying lotion. Suggested use is once a week. Also, please be careful as the tub may become slippery when using.
For a nice finishing touch, you can use our label and paste it onto your body scrub container. Simply trace the lid of your body scrub container to use as an appropriate size template. There is a printable version of this recipe along with the labels {here} if you would like to add it to your homemaking herbal.
