Don’t you just love fall? The days getting shorter, the air getting crisper, and a new academic year is stretching before you. For many this change in season signals a new football season. I like to call this time Mentoring Season! This change of season is a perfect time to pencil into your schedule purposeful, one-on-one mentoring time with your daughter each week.
YIKES! I can almost hear some of you asking me, and some of you are not using your indoor voices, “HOW do I find enough time in the day to mentor my daughter? I barely have enough time the way it is!”
Making time for mentoring is really all about priorities. We tend to make time to do the things we really want to do and are important to us. Did you know the average lifespan is 25,550 days? We are each given more or less 612,000 hours or 36,720,000 minutes in which to live our lives. Another way to put it is that time is a currency that we choose to spend the way we want. We all are given basically the same amount… but the key is how we make use or allocate the time we are given.
My first suggestion to you in regard to the time you choose to spend mentoring you daughter is very simple. Plan a time. Proverbs 14:22b states, “Those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness.”
1. Start with prayer. Ask the LORD if this is something that He wants you to do.
2. If the answer is yes, then look at your calendar and choose a day and time each week that you can start spending time with your daughter. Maybe it will just be 15 minutes, maybe you can afford 30 minutes, or maybe even an hour. Whatever the amount, mark the day and the time down on the calendar. Post it on the fridge for all to see has a way of keeping you accountable. By choosing and setting aside a specific time, your goal is clearly marked and easier to reach. Habakkuk 2:2
3. Begin your time with your daughter in prayer. Discuss what each of your goals are. Do you want a closer relationship? Do you wish to create a lifelong memory? Does your daughter want you to learn a specific skill? Ask God to guide you each time you meet. Read Psalms 25:4-5.
4. Ladies, you can expect God to do amazing things in your relationship because He is able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine! Read Ephesians 3:20
