10 Special Ways to Show Your Husband and Children Love This Valentine’s Day

Today our sweet contributor, Rebekah, is sharing with us:

Oftentimes Valentine’s Day is viewed strictly as a romantic holiday to be celebrated only be those who are married or in a relationship. I propose, however, that while I certainly think there is a lot to be said for that and it is precisely that side of Valentine’s Day which I really enjoy, we should begin viewing the day as an annual reminder to be intentional about the love we show to everyone in our home – our children included. Here are a few fun ideas to get your creative juices flowing when it comes to how you might intentionally show your husband and children just how much you love them this Valentine’s Day.

10 Special Ways to Show Your Husband and Children Love This Valentine’s Day

  • After the kids go to bed the night before Valentine’s Day, sneak around the house, decorating with pink and red balloons, streamers, and anything else fun and festive that you think they would enjoy waking up to the next morning

  • Leave a card on each family member’s pillow for them to wake up to on Valentine’s morning (these could be store-bought or even homemade heart-shaped cards cut out of construction paper)

  • Make heart-shaped cinnamon pancakes for breakfast and pipe cream cheese icing onto them, spelling out “I love you” with the icing

  • Go around the table and express three things you love and appreciate about each family member seated there

  • Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a over breakfast as a family, with each family member reading a verse, if able; lead your family in prayer, asking the Lord to help you to truly love your family in these ways today and everyday

  • Plan a scavenger hunt in your home for your kiddos, where at each stop they will find a little gift or trinket from you for them

  • Intentionally spend as much time today as you can reading to and playing with your children, and even just looking straight into their eyes and intently listening to whatever they want to talk about (nothing spells love to a child like that quality, focused time and attention from you!)

  • Surprise your husband with an all-planned-out Valentine’s Day date (this could be a date out, if that works, or a date in after the kids are in bed -maybe put them to bed early that night!)

  • If you are planning an evening in, consider making a dinner inspired by the “City of Love” – Paris! French onion soup and croissants, chicken cordon bleu and crepes, Beef bourguignon and eclairs – there are so many yummy options!

  • Take a deck of cards and glue a piece of paper to the front of each one. Make a “52 Things I Love About You” gift for your husband. Alternatively, use the deck to make a coupon book for your hubby.

Make It Special!

The point of these ideas is not to impress people or to feel Pinteresty or to have something cool to share on social media. It’s to make each member of your family feel loved, appreciated, and special. With that in mind, use the ideas from this list which your own unique family would really enjoy, and feel free to not use any of the others. Also consider coming up with ideas of our own – no one knows your family like you do! Whatever you do to make this Valentine’s Day special, consider taking those actions of love and dedicating yourself to making them a more frequent part of your everyday life. After all, we always want to be about the important work of making our families feel loved, special, and treasured – on Valentine’s Day and every day!
