Easter Egg Hunt Egg-stra-va-gan-za!

by Shelley on April 16, 2011 in Activities, Creativity, Food, Fun, Giveaways, Hospitality, Ministry, Uncategorized

I often times get so discouraged when I see Easter decorations. All those cute little bunnies, colored eggs, gorgeous baskets, Easter egg hunts, chocolates, jelly beans, and Peeps. Don’t get me wrong, my family and I enjoy the candy and the Easter egg hunts like everyone else, but, somehow, the real reason of Easter, the celebration of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, can get lost in all the fun.

So is it possible to counter the flood of frivolity our culture continually cloaks the Christian’s celebration of Resurrection Day?

My suggestion is to have a party! This might sound like a bit frivolous….but hear me out. A few years ago a friend and I wrote an E-book called The Party Book ~ Easy Celebrations with Eternal Purpose! In this book are creative ideas for all sorts of parties, and each party has invitations, games, icebreaker activities, and a devotion. We created it because our homes are an ideal way of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. In our book is a specific celebration especially designed to teach and celebrate the real meaning of Easter. It’s called Easter Egg Hunt Egg-stra-va-gan-za! and I want to share a FREE download of this party with all my friends at Raising Homemakers this month!

Just think of the possibilities! You can invite your nieces and nephews, neighborhood children and friends. Ladies, there are so many benefits to having a celebration of this sort in your home. Not only will you be training your daughters in the art of hospitality, such as invitation making, decorating, food preparation, party etiquette, entertaining games, but you are also able to offer your guest something that has eternal value And, after all, isn’t that what the good news of Easter is all about?

Blessings,
Shelley

P.S. One more thing! This month if you sign up for our mailing list you will receive a FREE Mp3 on how to create a quiet time entitled Taste and See!

What a great idea! But I have always wondered, why eggs? Does anyone know how eggs became part of the Easter tradition? (Is it a take-over from Passover, for instance?) Thanks for the great party plan.

I think it is supposed to represent New Life. A little chick (a new life) comes from eggs. Thanks to the Resurrection we now have a New Life. At least that is what I told my children when they were little.

The egg part is pagan….most of the commercialized stuff is pagan. Eastre is a “goddess” of fertility. Bunnies are born in the spring, so they became the symbol of the feast day. Egg hunting came in when female virgins would go collect eggs in a field to show their fertility.

It bothers me that churches host egg hunts….

I agree with Stephanie, it is really terrible when Churches start buying into the secular and PAGAN practices of Easter. We call it Resurrection Sunday in our family and have not started any of the secular practices with our children. Besides being a pagan thing, we just feel like it really detracts from the real reason we are celebrating the day…….Christ is Risen!!! We don’t celebrate Santa, Halloween and other secular holidays for the same reason. There are birthdays to celebrate people and get “stuff” – we just feel that Christian holidays should remain what they are, holy days to worship our Lord!!

My husband and I are just learning about the pagan history of Easter this year. So I appreciate this suggestion, as I would like to replace the easter egg hunt with something else this year. I am excited to try the resurrection rolls as well. :0)

Hello again Girls! A couple more thing…if you want the outline for Taste and See just email me at info@pumpkinseedpress.net

My goal, when writing this party in particular with Lorrie Flem for The Party Book ~ Easy Parties with Eternal Purpose, was to use our parties as an outreach to neighborhood children and relatives who may not have heard the real reason we celebrate Resurrection Sunday. The party clearly gives ample opportunity to share the good news of Christ’s death burial and resurrection through the Word of God. And isn’t that what sharing the Gospel is all about? This party is merely a vehicle for you to share the good news to those who might not walk into a church door. God’s Word is powerful and does not return void Isaiah 55:11.

My prayer is that the Lord will use this little celebration in many lives to reveal and glorify Him.

Nonetheless, I would be curious what others think about this topic? Please share it with your friends and family as their input would be valuable.

Blessings,
Shelley

I would love the free download for the Resurrection Sunday Eggstravaganza. I am putting together an Egg Hunt for our church next Easter and I want it to be really special from a Christian Viewpoint (No Easter BunnY). I wanted a time to tell the story of Easter for the kids. We are ideally located to bring in a bunch of neighborhood kids that probably have no contact with churches at any other time, so we want it to be memorable and to plant a seed about what it means to accept the gift that Jesus has purchased for us. Blessings, Kathy
