Voices from the Past (a delightful give-away!)

A Place for the Books

When I grasp a good book in my hands and read words that edify, my heart sings; it is a breath of fresh air, a lovely breeze on a warm summer’s day.

The books that inspire, uplift, and encourage are such rich blessings, but they are not always easy to come by.

This past week I’ve been able to read a book – or, listen to it, I should say. The book is a collection of letters written by a sturdy, godly woman in the 1700’s. Although she was imperfect in an imperfect world, she was a hard-worker, diligently sought to improve her skills, and delighted in the Lord and His sovereign plan.

At the age of sixteen, her father left her in charge of his plantation in South Carolina. She was responsible, put her mind to her work, and took pleasure in caring for her father’s property. A rigorous schedule she made for herself and followed, looking out for the well-being of others and ways to help the economy in the state she lived.

Her name? Eliza Lucas Pinckney. She was an inspiring woman, and God has used her legacy to continue to impact lives today.

Would you like to listen to her story, and know more about this amazing woman of God? Read below…

The new audio-book series Voices from the Past: American Heroines in Their Own Words is read aloud by Victoria Botkin. The first four in this series are:

The Letterbook of Eliza Lucas Pinckney
A Bride Goes West
An English Family in the American Wilderness
Abigail Adams: Her Letters

Each of these are encouraging, inspiring, challenging, uplifting, and share about the beauties and hardships of life and the women who lived before our time – women whose examples we can learn from.

With period-fitting music composed by her daughters, Mrs. Victoria Botkin captures each story in a way that imprints on hearts and minds. Her voice is soothing, with meaning behind each word . . . I believe I could listen to her all day long.

The Western Conservatory has graciously offered to give away four copies of the “Voices from the Past” audio-books – there will be four (4) winners! Each winner will get to choose which one of the audio-books they would like to win.

Last night in our family quiet time, my husband was reading from Proverbs 31 and discussing with our children about The Virtuous Women. It would be neat to win this audio series and listen about this women from the past that can encourage us today to live a life that counts for the Lord and have No Regrets!
Thanks for the opportunity.

We love to read biographies of “those who have gone before.” Not only does it give us historical context, but it is such an important thing for children to understand the process of “becoming”. It helps them to see that “great men and women” were faithful in the little things, and God increasingly trusted them with more.

Margreet November 30, 2010

This would very good too for learning English pronuciations for my daughter, since we are native Dutch, but homeschooling with an English Curriculum.
